Coaching Philosophy

Core Values

  • Effort and Dedication: Success in ice hockey comes from consistent effort and dedication both on and off the ice. Hard work is the foundation upon which all skills are built.
  • Resilience and Perseverance: Hockey is a demanding sport that requires players to overcome adversity. Building resilience through hard work helps players stay focused and motivated even during challenging times.
  • Teamwork and Accountability: While individual effort is crucial, ice hockey is a team sport. Players must hold themselves and their teammates accountable, working hard not only for personal success but for the team’s collective goals.

Expectations

  • Commitment to Practice: Players are expected to attend all practices and games, giving their maximum effort every time they step on the ice. Practice is where hard work turns into skill and strategy.
  • Continuous Improvement: Players should strive to improve every day, focusing on both their strengths and areas for development. This means being open to feedback, setting personal goals, and working diligently towards them.

Most Memorable Sports Moment

One of my most memorable ice hockey experiences occurred during my senior year at Elon University. Our club team had made it to the regional playoffs, facing off against a long-time rival known for their tough, aggressive play. The atmosphere was electric, with fans from both schools filling the stands, creating an intensity that was palpable on the ice.The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading goals and momentum throughout. As a defenseman, my primary focus was on shutting down their top scorers and keeping our zone clear. Late in the third period, with the score tied 3-3, I blocked a crucial shot from the point, sending the puck up ice for a fast break. This led to our forward scoring the go-ahead goal with just minutes left on the clock. However, the most unforgettable moment came in the final minute of the game. Our opponents pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, and the pressure in our defensive zone was relentless. In a scramble in front of our net, I managed to clear the puck off the goal line, preserving our lead. The final buzzer sounded, and we erupted in celebration, having secured a hard-fought victory and a spot in the next round of the playoffs. That game epitomized the resilience, teamwork, and passion that define ice hockey. The thrill of contributing to such a significant win and the camaraderie shared with my teammates made it an experience I’ll never forget.
